Your work will support internal and external research projects where you will be instrumental in design, experimentation, test and demonstrations of Xebec future processes, gas processing technologies and applications. The work will be multifunctional with variety and challenging. You will work in the research and development department, supports Xebec’s member companies and markets around the World in biogas, hydrogen and industrial gas products while working in collaboration with the wider Xebec research and development teams from other global Xebec group member research and development centers. You will be developing products and market-leading technologies that will challenge and enrich your work and grow your knowledge.

  • Take the role of lead engineer on research and development projects;
  • Test, design experiments and experiment data collection in the laboratory;
  • Perform prototype tests alone or with the help of lab technicians;

  • Identify and address safety, efficiency, quality improvement opportunities in conjunction with research and development personnel and supervisors;
  • Modify, update, manage equipment and processes to meet project requirements, product, and schedules;
  • Develop and manage project plans for process development activities to generate process design information for scale-up and evaluate process technical risks;
  • Define unit operations, generate PFD’s and P&ID’s, generate mass and energy balances, specify and size equipment, facilitate equipment procurement and fabrication, and identify instrumentation, controls, and automation requirements;
  • Support design of mechanical engineering and drawings;
  • Support research and development operations by making decisions in the plant according to real-time data to ensure the process is performing as required, perform troubleshooting, and develop corrective actions;
  • Work in a laboratory and process environment and respecting Xebec health, safety and environmental policies and procedures;
  • Listen actively and solve problems in a structured manner;
  • Deal with change while managing ambiguity to deliver business results;
  • Manage change through cross-functional partnering in a global environment;
  • Perform other duties as assigned.



The following qualifications are the minimum requirements necessary to successfully perform this role. However, any equivalent combination of experience, education and training which provides the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities would be acceptable:

  • B.Eng. or B.Sc. degree in Chemical Engineering or similar field with a minimum of four (4) years of industrial experience or M.Eng. or M.Sc. degree in Chemical Engineering or similar field with a minimum of two (2) years of industrial experience;
  • Experience in a chemical manufacturing environment or industrially focused research and development organization;
  • Member of the OIQ;
  • Knowledge with gas systems and plant (considerable asset);
  • Feels comfortable using a wrench as well as pen and paper;
  • Takes a leading role in the planning, execution and analyzing experimental work intended for determination of the process safety, critical process parameters and process robustness;
  • Participates and contributes ideas in the process development and optimization of unit operations with other scientists and engineers from the R&D group;
  • Apply chemical engineering principles and computer simulation/modelling to elucidate relevant factors such as kinetics, mass and heat transfer effects, as well as physical properties and stabilities of process materials to support the scale-up of processes to commercial facilities;
  • In conjunction with the Research and Development Team, participate in the scale-up of new processes in the pilot plant, for example, by participating in HAZOP assessments;
  • In conjunction with the Research and Development Team, assess the correlation of laboratory and plant performance of piloted processes with respect to robustness, quality, and efficiency.
  • Perform appropriate troubleshooting and/or optimization studies as required;
  • Supports the evaluation of new technologies or equipment that may offer greater data insight or improved efficiency to support process development activities within the department;
  • Completes all reports and documentation associated with assigned projects as directed and ensures that these are filed in the project files;
  • Utilizes advanced problem-solving techniques, including computer modelling software or design of experiments to develop process understanding or to help identify the root cause and determine the appropriate future course of action (e.g. CAPAs) on assigned projects;
  • Ability to code computers (VBA, C, Python, etc.) and PLC’s;
  • Experience in the preparation of drawings in AUTOCAD and Solid Works;
  • Comfortable with instrumentation, electrical connection, and programming;
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software;
  • Keeps the project and research and development managers of assigned projects up to date on experimental results and progress;
  • Works in a safe manner collaborating as a team member to achieve all outcomes;
  • Provides training and mentorship to other R&D colleagues on chemical engineering concepts and support their use of non-standard equipment;
  • Ensure personal adherence with all compliance programs including the Corporate Business Ethics and Compliance Program, Global Quality policies and procedures, Safety and Environment policies, and HR policies;
  • Knowledge of ASME or ATEX manufacturing standards (asset);
  • Able to work with minimum supervision;
  • Creative, innovative, and curious about the experiments, the engineering and science;

  • Attention to detail and accuracy;
  • Good laboratory and teamwork skills;
  • Excellent verbal/written communication skills, both in English and French;
